The exhibition shows the history of the art of folding, which extends back to antiquity. The custom of artfully folding tablecloths and napkins originated in Europe at the start of the 16th century. Early records of the practice stem from Northern Italy, probably from Florence. The artfully folded garments of the Renaissance served as an inspiration. A film documents the 500 years of napkin-folding history. In the exhibition, visitors can study the most famous folded sleeves in the history of art – namely those of the Mona Lisa – and discover their own folding skills.
