Palekh The magic of Russian lacquer miniatures

The fascination of academic folk art from a village.
28th November 2009 - 14th February 2010

Art lovers associate the name Palekh with two special types of Russian art: exclusive, exquisitely detailed icons and lacquer miniatures equally delicately painted on papiermâché. In the 17th century, Palekh was regarded as the centre of icon painting. During the 18th century, the style known to this day in icon painting as the “Palekh Style” was developed in this little Russian village. With the 1917 October Revolution, the Palekh icon painters found their livelihoods under serious threat and the ancient tradition came to an abrupt end.
